History of Style

Nordostflügel Stadtseite mit Wachhäusern

In the largest new building project in Upper Swabia, the palace of the Count of Montfort, the design of the four-wing renaissance palace based on a square floor plan was taken up again in the 18th century. Palace buildings of the Counts of Hohenlohe, Walburg, Hohenzollern and Fürstenberg built around 1600 and comparable in size and rank to those of the Dukes of Württemberg, the Margraves of Baden and the Electors of the Palatinate, served as examples. By resorting to this type of floor plan, the builders of the New Palace (Neues Schloss) in Tettnang endeavored to intensify the remembrance of the powerful age of the counts, and thus to improve their status long since nearly devoid of power.

Grünes Kabinett

The Green Cabinet (Grünes Kabinett), decorated with ornamental plasterwork by Johann Anton Feuchtmayer, shows delicate, lively ornaments which organically connect with the figure of a satyr. This room, which is among the most important testimonials to the Swabian Rococo, has its name from the green glass inlays framed in stuccowork latticework. The mirror fragments worked into the net decoration may originate from the rubble left after the fire in the previous building.
